Privacy Indicator

Privacy Indicator

What is Privacy Indicator?

Privacy Indicator is a notification area applet (application indicator) for the top panel of Ubuntu’s Unity desktop environment.

The goal of Privacy Indicator is to give a quick overview on the most important privacy settings and make it easy to change them.

The current version of Privacy Indicator supports the following settings:

  • Use online search results in the Dash: If this option is active the Unity Dash sends search queries to a server at Canonical to get additional search results.

  • Record activity (Zeitgeist): If this option is active a locally running service called Zeitgeist collects informations about user activity, saves them in the user’s home folder and lets other programs use them.

This data is used by some programs to show more example recently used files or applications. They are not given away to third parties.

  • Clear recent file list: For every user Ubuntu keeps a list of recently used files. This list is used for example in “Open File” dialogs and in the “File” menu of some applications.

This option removes all item from this list.

  • Clear Zeitgeist log: This option removes all item from the Zeitgeist activity log.

  • Show real name on panel: If this option is enabled the user’s real name is shown on the panel

Privacy Indicator is alpha software. So far it seems to work for me but it may have severe bugs I didn’t noticed yet. Use it at your own risk.

If you find a bug in Privacy Indicator please report it at the bugtracker at Launchpad so that I can fix it. Thank you.

Privacy Indicator wird unter Ubuntu 12.10 “Quantal Quetzal” entwickelt und getestet.

Alle software packages needed by Privacy Indicator are installed by default on Ubuntu.

Privacy Indicator is available from the PPA(“Personal Package Archive”) for Ubuntu 12.10 “Quantal Quetzal”:

If you add this PPA to your software sources Ubuntu’s Update manager will automatically install newer versions of Privacy Indicator, when they are available.

If you don’t know how to do this see this explanation.

Depending on how busy the Launchpad build servers are it may take a few hours for the PPA to get new packages after a release.
