What is RunLens?
RunLens is an alternative for the application lens that is used in Ubuntu’s Unity desktop to start applications.
RunLens doesn’t show “Apps available for Download” and “Most Frequently used” sections. Instead it only lists installed applications sorted by relevancy to the search query.
In addition to the program’s name and icon it shows a short description for every application.
Use Super-r to display RunLens.
Status
RunLens is Alpha software. It works for me but I expect it to have quite some bugs. Use it at your own risk.
If you find a bug in RunLens please report it at the bugtracker at Launchpad so that I can fix it. Thank you.
Requirements
RunLens is developed and tested on Ubuntu 11.10 “Oneiric Ocelot”. Most likely it doesn’t work with earlier version.
RunLens needs the following packages from the software sources:
- python-gmenu
- python-gobject
- python-whoosh
If you install the .deb package this packages will be automatically installed if needed.

Download
RunLens is available from the PPA (“Personal Package Archive”) ppa:diesch/testing for 11.10 “Oneiric Ocelot”. If you add this PPA to your software sources Ubuntu’s Update manager will automatically install newer versions of RunLens when they are available.
If you don’t know how to do this see this explanation.
If you rather want to download the files manually here there are:
| Version 0.02 | ||
|---|---|---|
| runlens-0.02.tar.gz | 23.2 KByte | |

| runlens_0.02_all.deb | 19.7 KByte | |
| MD5: 4a2cd20a02c782b8528ca12271187533 | ||
After you installed RunLens will be started automatically when you next log in.
